Running in is a great idea. It helps with
life span of motor and
performance. Motors can be run-in in oil but will require much
cleaning.
Running in under water (distilled) works too, is quick but will
shorten life span.
There are other ways which involve running
under no load for a time.
This is my method... Remove the back axle to
allow the motor to run without load, Lightly!!! (tiny amount)
Oil bearing and run in as slowly as possible for an hour,
increase the speed slightly and run for a further hour. Increase
again to about 1/2 full speed for another hour.
Finally run at full speed for about 10 mins. I then replace the
axle & wheels etc, oil bearings, grease gears and run for an
hour at slowish speed to help gear mesh. If they are noisy, use
tooth paste (mild abrasive) instead of grease, for 15 mins
helps.
